Be Honest. This Isn't Your First Language App.

Most language apps focus on marketing gimmicks rather than science, which sells product, but also bleeds users. The chances are you are one of those users who found that the results you were promised were less than "stellar." Or maybe it is your first language app, in which case, you are spared countless hours and frustration.

Language Learning Apps Promise a Lot But Don't Deliver

Language Learning Apps Promise a Lot But Don't Deliver

Think about it. Companies make money for as long as they keep you on the service; they are not compensated based on how much you learn. This is perhaps the main reason language apps are created to release dopamine by using "gamification" and other gimmicks that apps typically used to keep users addicted. It's time to break free from that addiction.

ScienceBasedLearning.com is Different. We Deliver.

ScienceBasedLearning.com is Different. We Deliver.

Yes, we make money when you subscribe to a paid option and stay. But we can't compete with the big players on the gamification aspects (and we wouldn't want to). We are striving to dominate the market on two metrics only: learning and retention. And we are confident that is what is most important when it comes to language learners. So confident that our entire business model is based on it.

Learn Faster. Retain More.

While language learning apps may be fun have cute illustrations, they are likely to be ineffective for retention. This is because information is only retained through repetition. Not just any repetition. Science has helped uncover the ideal repetition strategy for maximum retention. This is what we use at ScienceBasedLearning.com.

Learn The Top 80% of Words in a Language. Fast.

Did you know that you can understand roughly 80% of written language if you learn the 1000 most common words in a language? We have compiled these lists in over a dozen languages. Imagine not only understanding 80% of a second language but a third and a fourth ...the sky's the limit!

You can easily add your own terms and phrases or use our import feature to import them in bulk into one or more "lists." Then, you are prompted to enter the terms multiple times over carefully timed intervals. This is the magic science of spaced repetition.

Based On Science. Not Marketing.

Based On Science. Not Marketing.

Learning is one of the most studied areas by social scientists. It has long been known that spaced repetition is the most effective way to retain new vocabulary in one's long-term memory. Gamification and other gimmicks may keep you hooked, but you could spend a fraction of the time for better results.

The Best Way to Memorize Information

When learning sessions occur in time segments repeated over a long period, memory for the material learned remains strong and resistant to forgetting. With spaced repetition, you recall/repeat or review terms, phrases, facts, or any information with time gaps in between each recall or review. Our system currently uses 15 minutes, one hour, 24 hours, two days, and three days as the intervals, then a quick term recognition review every 30 days.

Learning

Think about how you encounter terms in real life. Are they isolated on flash cards or are they on a page with other words? Of course, is the latter. Your brain needs to get used to the distraction of other information. If this is how you practice, then you will be prepared for real-world applications, not just encountering your term isolated on a flashcard.

Once a new term is entered it will show up in the list as unlearned and possibly undefined if you did not also enter a definition (common with importing). The first step would then be to enter the definition:

Then you start by becoming "familiar" with the term. This means seeing the term and knowing the definition. To indicate you are familiar with the term, click the checkbox near the term:

Now you will begin the spaced repetition learning:

Once you enter the term for the first time, you will be ready to enter it again in 15 minutes. You will also see the "1" icon in yellow indicating that term is on what we can call "level 1".

You can come back any time after 15 minutes... it could be 15 minutes and one second or days later. Enter the term again:

A successful answer will increment the level (now "2") and level 2 means that the next guess will be in 60 minutes. Even though you can come back any time after 60 minutes, for the best results, stick as closely to the timed intervals as possible.

24 hours later...

24 hours later...

And 24 hours later... a correct answer after level 5 will mark the term as "learned" as indicated by the green graduation cap icon.

But what if you get an answer wrong?

  • An incorrect answer will display the multiple choice list where you then chose the answer from five possible answers. There is no additional penalty for getting the multiple choice wrong... you can try as many times as you like.
  • An incorrect answer on level 0 is basically a free pass to try again... try as many times as you like until you get the right answer
  • An incorrect answer on level 1 will take the term back to level and and increment the flag (incorrect answer) by one
  • An incorrect answer on levels 2-5 will take the term back two levels and and increment the flag (incorrect answer) by one
  • A green flag means 1 miss
  • A yellow flag means 2 misses
  • A red flag means 3 misses, and the term will then be moved to the Red Flags list

About the Red Flags List

This is a custom list that is automatically created from terms with three incorrect answers. This is a multiple choice-based list to make it easier to learn difficult terms. Once you learn the term in the Red Flags list, it will automatically be sent back to the original list where you start the learning process again.

No. This software was designed to be used in addition to other learning programs which include but are not limited to learning apps, YouTube videos, in-person or online classes, textbooks, podcasts, and more. Think of our software as a really advanced note-taking system where you can master the content learned. The reason why this software is just part of full-learning experience is because there is more to learning a new language than just vocabulary, and our software is primarily about mastering vocabulary.
